Bhagavad Gita : Brief summary of 18 chapters


The Bhagavad Gita is one of the most important and influential scriptures in Hinduism. It is a dialogue between the warrior Arjun and his charioteer Krishna, who is an incarnation of the Lord Vishnu. The Gita is set on the eve of the Mahabharat war. Lord Krishna teaches Arjun about the nature of reality, the soul, and the path to liberation.

The Bhagavad Gita is divided into 18 chapters, each of which deals with a different topic. Here is a brief summary of each chapter:

Chapter 1: Arjun Vishad Yoga:

This chapter introduces the main characters of the Gita, Arjun and Krishna, and sets the scene for the rest of the dialogue. Arjun is a warrior who is about to go to war against his own relatives. He is filled with doubt and despair, and he asks Lord Krishna for guidance.

Chapter 2: Sankhya Yoga:

In this chapter, Krishna explains the philosophy of Sankhya, which is a dualistic system of thought that posits the existence of two fundamental realities: matter (prakrti) and spirit (purusha). Sankhya teaches that liberation can be achieved by withdrawing the mind from the material world and focusing on the spirit.

Chapter 3: Karma Yoga:

In this chapter, Krishna introduces the philosophy of Karma Yoga, which is a non-dualistic system of thought that teaches that liberation can be achieved through selfless action. Karma Yoga teaches that we should perform our actions without attachment to the fruits of those actions.

Chapter 4: Gyan Karma Sanyas Yoga:

In this chapter, Krishna explains the philosophy of Gyan-Karma-Sanyas Yoga, which is a non-dualistic system of thought that teaches that liberation can be achieved through knowledge. Jnana Yoga teaches that we should cultivate the knowledge of our true self, which is the same as the Supreme Self.

Chapter 5: Karma Sanyas Yoga:

In this chapter, Krishna synthesizes the philosophies of Sankhya and Karma Yoga into a single system of thought called Karma Sanyāsa Yoga. Karma Sanyāsa Yoga teaches that we should perform our actions without attachment to the fruits of those actions, and that we should also renounce the fruits of our actions.

Chapter 6: Dhyan Yoga - Aatmsanyam Yoga:

In this chapter, Krishna teaches Arjun the practice of meditation, which is a powerful tool for cultivating concentration, focus, and clarity.

Chapter 7: Gyan Vigyan Yoga:

In this chapter, Krishna teaches Arjun about the nature of consciousness and the relationship between consciousness and the Supreme Self.

Chapter 8: Akshar Brahm Yoga:

In this chapter, Krishna reveals his true identity as the Supreme Self, or Brahman.

Chapter 9: Raja Vidhya Yoga:

In this chapter, Krishna teaches Arjun about the science of yoga, which is a systematic method for achieving union with the Supreme Self.

Chapter 10: Vibhuti Yoga:

In this chapter, Krishna describes his divine powers and attributes.

Chapter 11: Vishwarup Darshana Yoga:

In this chapter, Krishna reveals his universal form to Arjun.

Chapter 12: Bhakti Yoga:

In this chapter, Krishna teaches Arjun about the path of bhakti yoga, which is the path of devotion to the Supreme Self.

Chapter 13: Kshetra Kshetragna Vibhag Yoga:

In this chapter, Krishna explains the difference between the field (ksetra) and the knower of the field (ksetragna).

Chapter 14: Guntray Vibhag Yoga:

In this chapter, Krishna explains the three gunas, or qualities of nature: sattva, rajas, and tamas.

Chapter 15: Purushottam Yoga:

In this chapter, Krishna reveals his identity as Purushottam, the Supreme Being.

Chapter 16: Daivasursampad Vibhag Yoga:
